FAQ

Welcome to the Maine High School Rugby Association help center. We have pulled some of the most frequently asked questions from parents and compiled them all into one place. Should you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Is rugby a safe sport for my child to play?

Rugby, when played with proper coaching and adherence to safety rules, can be a safe sport. In general injuries tend to have less severity than that of other contact sports. It involves physical contact, but the rules prioritize player safety. 7s rugby is an even safer variation because contact is less frequent and severe. Protective gear is also available for players who want it.

Will I have to buy a lot of new equipment?

No. Basic rugby equipment includes a mouthguard, cleats, and comfortable athletic wear. All of which are not sport specific. So, you can use the equipment (e.g., soccer cleats) from other sports seasons.

What are the benefits of my child playing rugby?

At the fundamental level rugby promotes physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, and respect for opponents. Beyond that, rugby offers legitimate college recruiting opportunities and a uniquely welcoming international community. However, one of our players favorite benefit is that rugby presents the opportunity for all players to unlock their "total athlete" potential. No player is prevented from doing anything by a position. Everyone passes, tackles, jukes, kicks, and scores!
